IMO Alpine Type R are to bassy for me, I like the Type S better, even thought the Type R have better tweeters as far as components goes.. either way companents sound way better hooked up to an amp, than just running off the headunit.
but I don't really listen to bass music, except for Tech N9ne, so I 'd much rather hear the high end than the low.. if i had the money I get Focals, they are amazing

Polks are nice in the house and in the car. Good bang for your buck like others have said. I will be getting some soon for the EG. Currently I got some Autozone quickies for the panel and back and my 15 sub in the trunk. Stereo does a great job in make them Autozone quickies hit the highs I need, until I can get better.

IMHO, if you are on somewhat of a budget, the Memphis M Class coaxes. For the price, these things sound unreal and I think they sound better than Focal PolyGlass or PolyKevlars. With no amplification, these things sound great; with amplification, they just sound better. Trust me on this one, you won't be disappointed.
If you even think of considering the Type R's, make sure you have a hefty amp as these things are power hungry.

I 2nd the memphis m class. I have Power Reference's in my car and they rock just make sure you have them running off of an amp with a high pass filter or some sort of crossover because when you get all the bass going to the mids it really ruins the sound.

I would sugest, depending on brand and rms of speakers, putting a 4 ch. amp on your speakers. Best bang for your buck on already existing aftermarket speakers.
my setup:
6.5 alpine type r components (FRONT)
6 x 9 Infinity refrence (REAR)
1 Infinty Refrence 12" Sub in sealed q logic box
1 Alpine 4x 400 Amp ( 4ch for all component spkrs)
1 Alpine 2 x 1000 (2 ch 1000 wat max)
I like my setup bc it sounds CRYSTAL clear at all levels and pounds when i want it to.
It took alot of money and time perfecting it but IMO its time and money well spent.
I took first place at the KC Acura meet for sound quality. Beat out some guys with glass work and other more custom installs.
CLIFFNOTES:
Add an amp to existing speakers (depending on brand)
Or replace with Infinity and add an amp later

im runnin infinity kappa 6.5 components up front with a pair of ol' skool orion 12s out back. alpine v12 powerd all around, 100 rms to the mids, and 300 rms to the subs. i couldnt even imagine more sound. i used to have a pair of pheonix gold 6.5 components and 2 jl 12w6s with the same amps and it MAYBE sounded a little crisper, MAYBE, but didnt have as "strong" of a sound as the current setup. it is amazing, all around. no matter what type of music im listening to.
infinity mids
orion, or jl subs/s
alpine amps on everything
you cant go wrong!
